Verano - Summer, Part II

Munilla.  O te encanta, o no te encanta nada.  A mi me encanta.  Me encanta estar con mi familia y mis amigos, me encanta lo largos que son los días y lo mucho que cunde el tiempo, me encanta tomarme el café de la mañana asomada al balcón mirando el monte, me encanta sentarme en la plaza del pueblo comiendo pipas mientras arreglo el mundo con mis amigos, me encanta ver a mis hijos montar en bici en la plaza y hacer otras mil cosas que yo hacía a su edad,  me encantan las tertulias nocturnas cuando ya hemos acostado todos a los niños, me encanta el olor a tierra mojada cuando se acerca una tormenta, me encanta su Festival de Jazz, me encanta pasear por la carretera y me encanta subir al monte, me encanta ver lo feliz que es mi madre cuando ve lo mucho que disfrutan en su pueblo sus nietos, me encanta la comida de casa, me encanta lo bien que huele la fruta,  me encantan las vacas, en fin, que me encanta. 

Munilla, you either love it or you don't love it at all.  I love it.  I love spending time with my family and friends, I love how long days are and the feeling that time moves at a slower pace, I love having my morning coffee out in the balcony watching the hills, I love being in the town square eating sunflower seed while we sort the world out,  I love watching my kids riding their bikes in the square and doing the same things I did at their age, I love the long evening chats when the kids are asleep, I love the smell of wet soil when a storm is approaching, I love its Jazz Festival, I love seeing how happy it makes my mother to see her grandchildren having a ball at her village, I love the food at home, I love how the fruit smells, I love the cows, what can I say, I love it all.

Fotofuze!

En el mundo de etsy se ha instaurado una nueva moda, que es la de hacer fotos con un fondo blanco, muy blanco en el que destaca muchísimo el objeto principal de la foto.  Este efecto "fondo-blanco-nuclear" se consigue mediante el uso de una aplicación on-line llamada Fotofuze.  

Fotofuze está arrasando por varias razones, es fácil de utilizar, gratuita y te permite "tunear" tus fotos directamente desde etsy.  Además, de un tiempo a esta parte la mayor parte de los productos que aparecen en la página principal tienen este formato de fotos y hay que adaptarse a los tiempos. 

There is a new trend in etsy, all photos have a bright white background which makes the main object stand out.  This is achieved by means of an on-line application called Fotofuze.  This new app is a huge success for many reasons, it is free, easy to use and it downloads your images directly from etsy.  The fact that lately, most of the objects that make it to etsy's Front Page are made in this format.

El caso es que yo me he resistido, es cierto que las fotos quedan impactantes, casi como de catálogo, pero lo cierto que todas las fotos quedan así, las tuyas, las de una jabonera de Michigan, las de una ceramista de Verneuil sur Avre... todas. Y bueno,  es que a mi me gustan mis fotos, les dedico mucho tiempo, creo que son diferentes  y me sirven para contar un poco mi historia y lo que hago.

Así que sin renunciar a mi estilo, he hecho una prueba a ver como quedan mis diseños con Fotofuze.  Para ello, he hecho una prueba con uno de los nuevos colgantes tipo camafeo de cristal en los que he estado trabajando.  Este en concreto está hecho con unas ilustraciones de botánica Inglesas del Siglo XIX que me gustan especialmente.  

It has taken me a while to use it. It is true that the effect is quite dramatic and the photos almost have  

catalogue quality, but this is the case for all photos, not just your own, and in my case, I like my photos because they are different and I use them to convey the story of my designs and inspiration.  However, we all must adapt and so I decided to give Fotofuze a shot without renouncing to my personal style.  I have tried it out with the new glass cameo pendants I have been working on.  I have made these with 19th Century Botanical Illustrations which I specially like.

La foto original, como no me resisto a darle mi toque "antique" le he puesto una de mis cajitas de joyería antiguas y una rosa de fondo.

La foto retocada con Fotofuze.  La rosa del fondo se la ha "comido" la aplicación, y es que luego he leído que esto como queda bien de verdad es con fondos completamente blancos, ni con flores ni con de nada.  

El resultado me ha sorprendido gratamente, me da la sensación de que los colores de las flores destacan todavía más.  La pena es que esta aplicación no me quite los "brillazos" que produce el cristal del camafeo, creo que a este colgante le he hecho como unas 150 fotos, todas con brillazos, y ya harta, he decidido que debo aprender a vivir con ellos, eso o apuntarme a un curso de Photoshop.

This is the same picture with Fotofuze, which has (literally) gobbled up the flower.  I have been nicely surprised by the result.  I have the impression that the flower's colors stand out more.  The pity is that it does not erase the "flash effect" of the glass cabochon.  I have taken around 150 photos of this cameo, all of them without flash and I keep on getting all these reflections, so I have finally decided to either learn to live with them or learn to use photoshop.

De momento he decidido aplicarlo a algunas piezas, con los camafeos queda bien y para el resto de cosas habrá que ir a verlo poco a poco.  Y a vosotros que os parece, os convence fotofuze? 

For now I have decided to use it for some of my designs, the cameos suit this style, and as for the rest of the items, we'll see.  What do you think, do you like the fotofuze effect?

Jueves Cultural - Salamanca , Culture Thursday - Salamanca

La actividad del Jueves Cultural de esta semana, ni sucedió en Madrid ni se realizó en Jueves.  El esposo y yo nos escapamos a Salamanca con unos amigos el fin de semana, y bueno, creo que Salamanca es una de las ciudades con más culturas que conozco, así que me he tomado la libertad de utilizar mi escapada para el post de Jueves Cultural.

El esposo y yo estuvimos en Salamanca hace algunos años y nos gustó mucho pero esta vez, nos ha gustado todavía más.  Que preciosidad!  Hemos paseado, tuvimos un sol espléndido, hemos disfrutado de las tertulias con los amigos, y por supuesto, también hemos disfrutado y además, de manera abundante, de las ricas viandas que Salmantinas.  Volvimos a casa felices aunque ligeramente indigestos ;-)

This week's Culture Thursday activity did not take place on a Thursday nor in Madrid. Last weekend, the husband and I went on a mini-trip to Salamanca with a group of friends, and well, I think that Salamanca is one of the most cultural cities that I know of, so I have taken the liberty to include it in the Culture Thursday posts.

The husband and I had already visited Salamanca a few years ago, but I think that this time I liked it even more.  So beautiful!  We went for walks, we were blessed with a splendid sun, we enjoyed long, nice talks with our friends, and of course, we have also tasted, in abundance,  the delicious food from Salamanca.  We returned home happy although with a slight indigestion ;-)

La Cosecha - The Harvest

A la vuelta a la normalidad tras las vacaciones, mis amigos me han preguntado por mis hijos, mi familia... y mis tomates!

Pues bien, mis "tesoros" han pasado un verano estupendo, se pusieron más gorditos y por fin adquirieron ese divino tono coloradito tan apetecible.  La producción sigue yendo viento en popa, no nos da para un gazpacho porque sólo teníamos 4 matas pero si que estamos tomando unas ensaladas de tomate bien ricas.

El año que viene más y mejor!!!

Back in the real world after our Summer vacation, my friends politely ask me how my children are, how is my family and how my tomatoes are faring.

My "treasures" have had a lovely Summer, they got plumper, and at last they acquired that delicious red tint so becoming in the tomato world.  Production is still going well, and even though we do not produce enough to make gazpacho because we only have four plants, we are enjoying some yummy tomato salads.

Next year more and even better!

Mi tesoro.  Unos tomates del jardín que regamos y cuidamos con mucho esmero.  Si todo va bien, en unos días estos, y otros que hay en otras matas se van a convertir en una ensalada de esas de tomate en rodajas, aceite de oliva y sal.  Cuando el tomate es bueno no hace falta nada más y estas matas  me las dio mi cuñado pero a el se las dio el  tío de fulanito, que es amigo de menganito y que tiene una huerta en Albelda de Iregua – pedigrí verdulero riojano al más alto nivel.

Y crecen fenomenal en macetones, con lo que no tuvimos que destrozar el césped para plantarlas.

My treasure. Tomatoes from our garden which we water and nurture with all our love. If all goes well, in a few days these beauties are going to become tomato salad, of the kind that only has sliced tomatoes, Spanish olive oil and salt. When the tomato is good, you don’t need any other ingredients, and these are supposed to be good, not only because they are organic but also because the plants were given to me by my brother in law who in turn got them from someone’s uncle who is famous for his orchard in Albelda de Iregua – which in the Rioja region is more or less the best you can get.

They also grow really well in big flowerpots which meant that we did not have to wreck the lawn to plant them.

Las pasadas vacaciones de Semana Santa, el esposo y yo tuvimos la suerte de ir a pasar unos días a Canadá a visitar a mi hermana Araceli que se mudo allí en Septiembre. Cuando mis amigos se enteraban de que íbamos siempre me hacían el mismo chistecillo: "sabes lo que se ve desde lo alto de Toronto? Torontoentero!" Pues por si alguno de vosotros tenía alguna curiosidad por saber como es Torontoentero, es así.

El centro de Toronto está lleno de rascacielos en plan mini-Nueva York, aunque también tiene unos edificios tan chulos como el de abajo y muchos barrios llenos de artistas francamente interesantes.

Después de pasar un par de días en la capital del estado de Ontario, darle sus regalos a Araceli y llamar a mi madre para asegurarle que su niña (de 30 años) está bien y contenta, cogimos el coche y nos fuimos hacia el norte, la primera parada fue la capital de Canadá, Ottawa.

Ottawa es preciosa, una ciudad muy cuidada llena de hermosas avenidas y grandiosos edificios. El más bonito de todos es el Parlamento, el cual está rodeado de estatuas de bronce de los últimos Reyes del Reino Unido y de Canadienses ilustres. Me chiflan las estatuas de bronce así que me harté de hacer fotos, esta es de la Reina Isabel II.

De ahí otra vez coche y al norte otra vez. Lo bueno de ir sin niños es la capacidad de aventura y de improvisación que tienes. Camino de Quebec sacamos nuestra guía y miramos a ver dónde podríamos parar para ver alguna cosilla de interés, así que nuestra siguiente parada fue "Sucré de la Montagne" una granja de arces para hacer el famoso sirope. El procedimiento es fácil, clavan los cubitos al árbol y van recopilando el sirope que sueltan (luego lo hierven y le hacen más cositas). De todas las excursiones que hicimos igual fue la menos espectacular pero creo que fue en la que más me reí. La granja era muy curiosa y los dueños de la granja también, curiosos pero francamente encantadores y muy generoso con el sirope de arce y las tortitas, nos pusimos ciegos!! Cargamos con sirope para llevarnos a casa y volvimos a coger el coche. Próxima parada, Quebec.

Para Quebec nos habíamos reservado dos días para verlo tranquilamente. Llegamos por la noche y salimos a cenar, y al finalizar la cena la dueña del restaurante nos dijo que para el día siguiente esperaban una nevada de 30cm. No la creímos, hacía un noche de escándalo y en Toronto nos habían dicho que ya no iba a nevar más.

Bien, pues al día siguiente bajamos a desayunar y esto es lo que pasó:

Mega nevada!!! Pero no sólo mega nevada, si no, la madre de todas las nevadas con ventisca incluida! La nieve caía en horizontal no en vertical! Hicimos un amago de salir a pasear, estuvimos fuera del hotel 5 minutos y volvimos con la cara que se nos caia a trozos de congelación. No se podía salir. Afortunadamente, ya que nos teníamos que quedar dentro del hotel por lo menos habíamos elegido uno bueno, ya que nos alojábamos en el Chateau Frontenac. Por una vez, puedo decir que he disfrutado de un hotel y de sus instalaciones a tope ya que normalmente cuando estoy de viaje sólo voy a dormir.

Parece un castillo verdad? Según dicen, es el hotel más fotografiado del mundo. La verdad es que no me extraña, yo misma hice como 800 fotos.

Al día siguiente ya sólo nevaba (en vertical) y pudimos salir a ver la ciudad. Quebec es precioso, cada calle, calle rincón es encantador. Hice como otras 800 fotos y estas son algunas de mis favoritas.

También estuvimos en Montreal, en Niagara, Thousand Islands... Otras mil fotos más y otras mil anécdotas que no puedo poner en este post porque si no sería eterno!!

This Easter my husband and I (sans enfants) went to Canada to visit my sister Araceli who moved there last September. After spending a couple of days with her in Toronto we rented a car and headed up north to visit Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec. We also did a couple of small excursions, first to a farm where they produced Maple Syrup (Sucré de la Montagne) after which we both became addicted to the stuff (so delicious but so very fattening!). Our other excursion was to a place called Thousand Islands (I wonder if the famous salad dressing was invented there…) which is basically a huge river with over a thousand small islands and each island has a house, a mansion or a castle depending on the owners wealth at the time. It was the place where rich Americans and Canadians went to relax in the late 19th Century.

For me, the loveliest part of the trip (apart from being with my sister whom I miss very much which is kind of weird because we have not lived in the same city for the past five years) was Quebec, such a beautiful city! We had a bit of bad luck with the weather though (the snowy photos all belong to Quebec) and the first day could not leave the hotel as there was a huge blizzard. Fortunately, the second day there was no blizzard (only regular snow) and were able to visit the city. I took hundreds of photos and here I have selected a few of my favourites.

Peonies / Peonías

Peonías. Las adoro. Son mis nuevas flores favoritas. Igual se debe a mi pasión por las cosas antiguas y las peonías tienen un aire de antaño, de tomar el té en tazas de porcelana inglesa, con mini-sandwiches de pepino, sentada en un sofá de cretona en un delicioso saloncito abarrotado de cuadros de escenas campestres.

Peonies. I adore them. They are my new favorite flowers. Maybe it is due to my passion for antique things and peonies have an old world feeling. A feeling of having tea in delicate English China cups with cucumber sandwiches, seated on a flowery sofa in a delightful sitting-room full of paintings depicting country scenes.

Designs for a Wedding - Diseños Para una Boda

Mis amigos me han preguntado: y en la boda, llevabas alguno de tus diseños? Por supuesto, pero no uno, un montón!

Y es que estoy pasando por una etapa barroca de mi vida. Antes, para los eventos yo era de las de "menos es mas" y ahora pienso, "una queda muy bien, pero cuatro juntas quedan fenomenal!"

Estas son la pulseras en las que he estado trabajando últimamente. Algunas ya están en la tienda y otras son prototipos que necesito pulir.

Yo siempre he sido más de pendientes, pero reconozco que estoy disfrutando mucho haciendo estas pulseras. Están hechas de piedras semi-preciosas y de perlas que voy escogiendo con mucho cariño una a una, luego las combino, les añado detalles... se las enseño al esposo (mira cariño, esta piedra es especialmente bonita, verdad?). El pobre sin quererlo se está convirtiendo en un experto en piedras semi-preciosas sin darse cuenta.

Y ahora toca la segunda parte. Los pendientes a juego! Os mantendré informados.

My friends have asked me if I wore any of my designs at the wedding. Yes I did, but not just one, I wore a lot of them!

You see, I am going through a "barroque" period in my life. For special events I was of the sort who thought "less is more", but now I think, "one looks good, but four together look amazing!"

These are the bracelets I have been working on lately. Some are already available at the shop and others are samples I am still working on.

I have always been more of an earring maker, but the truth is that I am enjoying making these very much. They are made with semi-precious stones and fresh water pearls which I carefully select one by one. Then I combine them, I add a little detail... I show them to my husband ("look darling, this stone is specially pretty, don´t you think?"). My poor dear is becoming an expert on semi-precious stones without realizing it!

And now comes part two... making the matching earrings! I will keep you posted.

This Weekend... - Este Finde....

Fin de Semana de Boda en Logroño. Además de celebrarlo con los felices y radiantes novios, he tenido la oportunidad de estar con mi familia y ver y ponerme al día con amigos muy queridos algunos de los cuales, hacía años que no veía.

Hemos hablado mucho, hemos paseado mucho (tiempo impresionante!), nos hemos reído mucho y hemos comido mucho, mucho, mucho! Me declaro fan incondicional de la calle Laurel y sus pinchos!

Y qué tal ha estado vuestro fin de semana?

This weekend we went to my hometown of Logroño to attend a wedding. Apart from being with the radiant bride and groom, I have also had the chance to be with my lovely family and to catch up with some very dear friends, some of which, I had not seen in years.

We have talked a lot, walked a lot (we enjoyed some very amazing weather!), laughed a lot and eaten lots and lots and lots! (I hereby declare myself a staunch fan of the tapas bars at Calle Laurel - in Logroño and other towns of the North of Spain, we call tapas pinchos).
