Introducing Alanna Cavannagh

Adoro los libros clásicos de Penguin Books (los de las tapas naranjas de toda la vida), las novelas son muy de mi estilo (aunque yo tengo muy pocas, mi sueño es tener los trabajos completos de Evelyn Waugh en "formato naranja"). Además, la estética me parece molona. Por eso, cuándo descubrí el trabajo Allanna Cavanagh quedé prendada.

I adore vintage Penguin Books (the ones with the vintage orange covers), the novels are the kind I like (I own very few of them though, my dream is to have the complete works of Evelyn Waugh in "the Penguin orange format"). Also, aesthetically , I find them very pleasing. So, when I discovered Allanna Cavanagh's work, I was totally smitten.

Esta ilustradora Canadiense hace unos grabados e ilustraciones divinas pero, lo que de verdad me llamó la atención fueron sus grabados de los Penguin Books. Alucinante lo bien que quedan verdad? Me tienen enamorada.

This Canadian illustrator makes divine prints and illustrations, but what really caught my attention where her Penguin Books Prints. It is incredible how great they look! In fact, I think I am in love with them!

In here you can see how they look once they are framed and displayed on the wall. The photo is from her actual living room. Doesn't it look great? I also recommend her blog, I read it all the time, it is delightful.

Veis los pantalones de la foto? (de Zara por cierto). Pues yo siempre he sido fan de ese tipo de pantalones y me los he puesto durante años y años, pero tuve que dejar de hacerlo porque mis hermanas se metían conmigo y me decían lindezas del tipo..."parece que llevas los bombachitos de Enrique VIII" o "Le has robado los pantalones a MC Hammer". Así que hoy les quiero decir a las dos:

Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!! Se llevan y son tendencia! Yo era una visionaria y vosotras no! Ja! Pero os perdono y no os guardo rencor, las divas de la moda estamos acostumbradas a todo tipo de críticas ;-) Un beso guapas.

See the trousers in the photo? (they are from Zara by the way). I have always been a fan of that type of pants and worn them during years but I had to stop wearing them because my two sisters used to pick on me and say things like "oh, it looks like if you are wearing Henry VIII's pants" or "you have stolen MC Hammers pants". So today, I would like to say something to the both of them:

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! They are fashionable and the latest trend! I was a visionary and you were not! Ha! But I forgive you, no hard feelings, after all, us fashion divas are used to all kinds of criticism ;-) Big kiss for you lovelies.

Lately - Ultimamente

Mi último libro, mezcla de biografía y de letras comentadas por su autor, el genial y muy ameno Stephen Sondheim. Me ha sorprendido lo duro que se muestra con el trabajo de sus compañeros de profesión, pero se lo perdono porque es todavía más severo con su propio trabajo (echa pestes de la canción "María" de West Side Story, dice que peca de tierna y sin embargo a mi me parece absolutamente preciosa!). Muy entretenido y altamente recomendable.

My latest book, a mixture of a biography and commented lyrics by its author, the great and very entertaining Stephen Sondheim. I was a bit surprised to how harsh he is with the work of some of his colleagues, but I forgive him because he is even more critical of his own work (he strongly dislikes the song "Maria" from West Side Story as he considers it has an "overall wetness" whereas I think it is a beautiful song). Very entertaining and highly recommendable.

El último DVD que he visto. Lo bueno de no poder ir al cine tanto como antes y llevar un cierto retraso en las pelis que una quiere ver es que cuando te prestan un DVD lo recibes emocionada y con los brazos abiertos, como si fueras a ver el último estreno de la cartelera. Londres sale preciosa (Hugh Jackman y Scarlett Johansson también salen divinos) y Woody Allen borda su papel de Woody Allen. Muy divertida, ha merecido la pena esperar, um... 5 años?

This is the latest DVD that I have seen. The good thing about not being able to go to the cinema as much as I used to is that when someone lends you a DVD you receive it with open arms, like if you were going to see the latest film. In the film, London looks beautiful (Hugh Jackman and Scarlett Johansson look divine too) and Woody Allen is great playing himself. Lot's of fun and worth waiting, um... 5 years to watch it (I am behind!).

Mi padre no era fan de la música Mariachi (yo tampoco), pero si era fan de Linda Ronstadt (yo también) y de alguna manera este disco llegó a la colección familiar. Era de sus discos favoritos. Nunca le presté demasiado atención, pero el otro día buscando en Spotify a Linda Ronstadt cantando swing con la orquesta de Nelson Riddle me salió este disco. "Oh, el disco de papá, vamos a ponerlo" y, ahora yo también soy fan. Los lunes en la oficina los empiezo con Linda y sus Mariachis escuchando Canciones de mi Padre que curiosamente, también eran las del mío.

My father was not a Mariachi music fan (neither am I), but he was a Linda Ronstadt fan (me too), and somehow, this CD made it to the family music collection. It was one of his favorite records. I never paid much attention to it but the other day looking for Linda Ronstadt swinging with Nelson Riddle in Spotify this record appeared. "oh, dad's record, let's hear it", and now I am a fan too. Now I start Monday Mornings in the office listening to Linda and her Marichis singing "Las Canciones de mi Padre" (translation: My father's songs) which curiously enough, were also the songs of my father.

Nota: Semana horrible en el panorama mundial, he decidido que nunca más me volveré a quejar de nada, mi país puede estar pasando por una horrible crisis económica pero no estamos en guerra ni hemos pasado por una horrorosa catástrofe natural con terribles consecuencias. Hoy además de un Feliz Martes también deseo Paz y Salud para vosotros y vuestras familias.

Note: Horrible week in the global scene. I have decided that I will never again complain about anything. My country may be going through a terrible economic crisis but we are not at war nor have we gone through a terrible natural disaster with disastrous effects.

Today, apart from wishing you a Happy Tuesday, I aslo want to wish for you and your families peace and health.

... and for all of you English Speakers, in this post I have made a game with words in Spanish that unfortunately, has no translation possible (or at least I can't think of one!), but basically, the quid of the post is the huge amount of hunting horns that I have seen lately in decor magazines. I am curious to know what you think.

Our Day - Nuestro Día

Mañana se celebra el Día Internacional de la Mujer trabajadora. Nunca me ha gustado ese nombre, ya que que considero que la mujer siempre ha trabajado, sólo que en ocasiones el trabajo lo ha desarrollado en su casa y sin sueldo. Y además, como curran las amas de casa!

Yo prefiero dedicar el día de mañana a nuestras madres, abuelas, bisabuelas... a aquellas mujeres gracias a las cuales cosas como, tener cuenta bancaria propia, poder viajar sin el permiso de nuestro padre/marido, casarnos o irnos a vivir con quién nos de la gana en vez de tener que hacerlo con un desconocido, estudiar, trabajar, votar, etc. nos parecen las cosas más naturales del mundo.

Desafortunadamente, en el mundo en pleno Siglo XXI todavía hay muchas mujeres que no pueden hacer nada de esto.

Esto va por ellas. Feliz Día de la Mujer.

Tomorrow is International Woman's Day. In Spain for some unkown reason it is called International Day of the Working Woman. I have never liked this name as I have always considered that women have always worked, it is just that sometimes they worked in their homes and without a salary (and how those housewives work!).

I would rather dedicate tomorrow to our mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers....Women thanks to which today, things like having our own bank account, being able to travel without the consent of our father/husband, get married or live with whomever we want and not be forced to be with a stranger, studying, working, voting, etc. seem to us the most natural things in the world.

Unfortunately, in this world, in the XXI Century there are still a great many women who can not do any of those things.

This one is for those women. Happy Women's Day.

Peonies / Peonías

Peonías. Las adoro. Son mis nuevas flores favoritas. Igual se debe a mi pasión por las cosas antiguas y las peonías tienen un aire de antaño, de tomar el té en tazas de porcelana inglesa, con mini-sandwiches de pepino, sentada en un sofá de cretona en un delicioso saloncito abarrotado de cuadros de escenas campestres.

Peonies. I adore them. They are my new favorite flowers. Maybe it is due to my passion for antique things and peonies have an old world feeling. A feeling of having tea in delicate English China cups with cucumber sandwiches, seated on a flowery sofa in a delightful sitting-room full of paintings depicting country scenes.

The Queen's Speech - El Discurso de la Reina

Parece que “El discurso del Rey” ha arrasado en los Oscars, verdad?

Bueno, pues esta Señorita que tenemos aquí es ni más ni menos que Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, posteriormente conocida como Elizabeth Windsor, Queen Elizabeth o desde que yo tengo uso de razón, la Reina Madre. Elizabeth era la mujer del Rey Jorge VI (el de la peli).

Aquí sale en su juventud luciendo la tiara Strathmore, regalo de bodas de su padre. Es curioso, porque siempre que pienso en ella es en su etapa de “reina madre”, es decir mayor, y como que me cuesta asociarla a esta guapa jovencita.

It looks like the King’s Speech has been this year’s big Oscar winner.

Well, this young lady we have here is none other than Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, later known as Queen Elizabeth, or, ever since I can remember, the Queen Mother. Elizabeth was the wife of King George VI (the one portrayed in the film).

This is a picture of her in her youth, wearing the Strathmore Tiara which was a wedding gift from her father. It’s funny, because whenever I think of her, I think of her “Queen Mum” period, that is, when she was elderly, and I find it difficult to associate her with this pretty young woman.
